Staplegrove 2nd XI 177 Wellington 2nd XI 166
Wellington 2nd XI lost their unbeaten record in Division Six South of the Somerset League in the heat at Staplegrove last time out, but still collected a decent haul of eighteen points ahead of their big game with top boys Lydford at home this weekend.
Thom Trott took charge of the Red and Blacks second string on the day in the absence of Alex Troake and saw the home side win the toss and have no hesitation in batting first.
G.Bishop with 27 brisk runs saw that Staplegrove got away well, but lost wickets to be 57-3 as Lee Nichol and Ian Hewson got through the home side’s top three.
Arden with 43, Pope with 28 and Adams with 25 were responsible for the bulk of the Grove runs in the second half of their innings as Wellington wrapped matters up with seven balls going unused as Rob Moysey, Lewis Sparks and Andy Hurry each claimed a wicket with Oli Beale’s leg spin doing the main damage with a decent 4-17 in 5.5 overs.
Wellington were in a rare spot of bother with the bat at 34-3, but Oli Beale was equal to the task with 48 crisp runs that ended when he was fifth out at 91.
From 96-6 Lewis Sparks with a fine 60 and Ian Hewson with 20 not out took Wellington to the brink of victory as they added a fine 62 run seventh wicket stand, but the innings unravelled falling from 158-6 to be all over for 166 with in excess of two overs going unused as K.Butland’s late burst of 3-7 in 2.5 overs saw his side over the line.
