Strong show from Under 11s in Cup Defeat

Wellington under 11s made a strong showing in their 64 run defeat, away against a strong Taunton Vale side on Friday evening in the 1st round on the Somerset County Cup.

Batting first James Weymouth and Sam Foster were pegged back by the Vale opening bowlers, then Ben Horne and Riley Bowler moved the score to 208 at the mid point.

Marcia Reah and Luke Golding pushed on adding 16 runs in their 4 overs before captain Olly Hunt and Jacob Hurry cut loose, plundering 33 runs in their stint, with the penultimate over yielding 19 runs.

A target of 287 would have been testing, but with the visitors losing 5 wickets in their 16 overs the 30 run penalty made the home side favourites.

In the field Wellington made a solid start only conceding 12 runs by the end of the 4th over, but then Vale sent in their top pair, who added almost 50 runs, meaning the game was as good as over half way through the home side’s innings.

All the bowlers and fielders stuck to their task, including young Oliver Hutchings who made a guest appearance as substitute fielder and can look forward to a fruitful season.

The next match doesn’t get any easier when Taunton Deane A will be the visitors to the Playing Field (Friday 13th May @ 6pm), which will also be the first family social evening.
