Bridgwater 137-4 Wellington 79

Bridgwater regained the Somerset Cricket Board’s Indoor Title a year after losing it to Wellington as the League’s Division A once more went to the very last game.

With Wembdon falling through the trap door in the Division’s opening game when they lost to Taunton St Andrews it was over to Ashbrittle and North Petherton to battle it out in the second game and a win for Ashbrittle would see matters go down to the last game and bring net run rate into play once more as this was the factor that saw Wellington become champions twelve months ago, but Wellington’s near neighbours were beaten and so ended up in third place and now it was Petherton who were willing on the Red and Blacks.

On winning the toss Wellington decided to bowl first and went with Arron Campbell’s off spin first up and it was too good for Halleran who was trapped palpably in front for 9.

Butt and Vickery got to the retirement score of 25 and did well for their side, but the later order was removed well by Wellington as Campbell got a second wicket to end up with 2-21 and with Paul Short holding a chance off of Alex Sparks at 107-4 Wellington were well in the game, but the retired pair returned and as was emphasised by Vickery hitting the last two balls of the Bridgwater innings for six they put their foot to the floor and added thirty valuable runs in very dynamic fashion.

If one or two decisions had gone for Wellington during the course of their time in the field the required total would have been lower, but a stumping and run out that were felt to be clearly out were not ruled in Wellington’s favour and this was disappointing.

Wellington lost a wicket in the first over and this was a setback they could have done without for sure.

Wellington got to the last over of the twelve available to them, but could only muster 79 in reply to a mean and disciplined Bridgwater attack and so lost by 58 runs to see that Bridgwater will go forward to represent Somerset in the ECB’s National Club Indoor Competition after Christmas.

Wellington finished in fifth place after the round of five games was completed.

Sampford Arundel won Division B a season after losing their Division A slot, so next winter will see plenty of local derby action on the indoor surface at SCCC.
