Uphill Castle Sunday XI 213-9 Wellington Sunday XI 214-4

Monday, July 4th, 2011

Wellington Sunday XI recorded a fine friendly win at Weston Super Mare based side Uphill Castle last weekend when they chased a decent enough total down with nine balls to spare as the double header of Sunday matches for 2011 with the WEPL Bristol and Somerset club ended all square with an away win each.

Uphill decided to bat first on a good track and saw Tasker with 30 and Wilcox with 14 get to within one run of a half century opening stand before Ali Bunce got the breakthrough that Wellington desired as Will Hinchcliffe pocketed a low chance at mid wicket.

Sam Murdock with 3-30 got rid of the Uphill middle order including danger man Kersey who had made a hundred at Wellington back in May and at 64-4 Uphill were in a spot of bother, but their skipper A.Llewellyn with 84 and Holt with 28 made things better for them with a fifth wicket stand of 51 and the lower Uphill order got their score to 213-9 at tea with their skipper falling to Adrian Lee, he was joined by Alex Troake and Paul Short in claiming late wickets.

Holt got a wicket for Uphill Castle before Charlie Davies and Max Capaldi settled into a 144 run second wicket stand for Wellington as they dominated the game; mixing well placed nudges and glances for singles with powerful boundary shots saw knocks of 78 and 93no posted.

Davies was caught and bowled by Tasker, but Sam Murdock with 15 and Steve Symons with 10 kept the Wellington run rate ticking over nicely and it fell to Paul Short to win the game with a six; good times for Wellington!

Uphill Castle Sunday XI 235-8 Wellington Sunday XI 229

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Wellington Sunday XI so nearly pulled off a dramatic friendly win over WEPL (Bristol and Somerset) Division side Uphill Castle at home last weekend, but were denied by just 6 runs in the last over as the team from Weston Super Mare took the plaudits.

Uphill decided to bat first and found Adrian Lee in excellent form as he took a wicket with the first ball of the match and reduced the visitors to 36-3 as he took 3-5 in 8 overs, but all the time the aptly named Bail was building an innings as he and Kersey added a massive 160 for the fourth Uphill wicket; Bail was caught on the boundary by Adrian Lee off of Alex Troake for 69 and this made Uphill fall away a little as Paul Short found himself on a hat trick and with late wickets for Jake Nichol and Rob Moysey they ended on 235-8 with Kersey having made a fine 112no.

Wellington were 30-4 before Rob Moysey and Paul Short got together and added 96 for the fifth wicket with Moysey making a capital 61 as he anchored the Red and Blacks innings once again.

Short made a wonderful 96no as he and Adrian Lee gave Wellington hope of a famous victory with their 77 run ninth wicket stand; Lee blasted 32 and if he and Short had batted through then Wellington would have won, but Kersey caught and bowled him and the last over came with ten needed to win, but when Steve Symons was run out going for a second run on the second ball the game was up and Uphill Castle had just got home.

A.Llewellyn with 4-23 in 7.2 overs was their best bowler.

Thanks go to the parents of the Club’s Under 15s side for preparing and serving an all day barbecue and for manning the bar as well; this was an excellent social event and was well supported by a wide section of the Club’s membership; particular thanks go to Mel Beal, Shellie Jarman and Ali Campbell.
Another such event will be held on Sunday 10th July.

Wellington Sunday XI 230-6 Sidmouth Sunday XI 159-7

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Wellington Sunday XI recorded their first win at Sidmouth since re-establishing the fixture back in 2005 when Steve Symons and his side came back from the Devon coast with a 71 run win last weekend in a game that saw a fine all round performance from a side that mixed youth and experience well.

Wellington opted to bat first on a fine batting track and saw James Bath take ten off the opening over of the innings; a wicket was lost early on but the excellent Charlie Davies and the reliable Rob Moysey added 74 second wicket runs for Wellington as they repelled Sidmouth, they were particularly severe on Mansfield who bowled fast, but persistently no balled too as he took 2-57 in 8 overs.

Moysey was caught in the covers for 29 and next ball another wicket was lost and Wellington needed to consolidate; this came in the form of Davies and Liam Kubicki who added an excellent 79 in a fourth wicket partnership – Davies steadily accumulated runs all innings and Kubicki with 22 was good value for his runs.

Paul Short and Ali Bunce got Wellington over the 200 mark and saw Davies make it to three figures – the first of the season for Wellington – as he made 106 with 14 fours as he played very well off his legs; he was out with one ball to go in the Wellington innings as they got to 230-6 at tea – Chaplin with 3-36 was Sidmouth’s best bowler.

Sidmouth skipper Griffiths played like a man possessed as his side chased six an over to win; he had 45 on the board out of 52 when he was run out by a combined James Bath/Aks Latifi effort when a call for a single to the covers went very wrong – after this dismissal Sidmouth did not truly threaten the Wellington total.

George Hooper bowled a great spell of seam and bowled better than 1-47 in 8 overs suggests, Ali Bunce with 2-28 in 8 fine overs kept Sidmouth quiet and this pressure was kept up as the innings developed; Paul Short with 1-6 in 6 overs let nothing go, Sam Baycock’s left arm spin saw him use flight well, they gave way to Rob Moysey and Alex Troake and the leg spinners kept good control on the menu for Wellington; Chaplin continued his good game with a knock of 37 as he and Briggs added 53 for Sidmouth’s sixth wicket, but the home side were well behind the clock and they lost one more wicket when James Bath knocked over Claydon in the last over.

Wellington Sunday XI 176 Brixham Sunday XI 179-8

Monday, April 25th, 2011

Wellington Sunday XI nearly pulled off a dramatic victory in South Devon on Easter Sunday when Devon League Division A side Brixham nearly made a hash of chasing 177 to win.

After losing the toss and been asked to bat Wellington had to weather the fine opening burst with the new ball as was sent down by both Orchard and Marr; Paul Short and Charlie Davies stood firm and with the aid of many extras Wellington were moving along well – the home side bowled some excellent deliveries, but also some really wayward fayre too as they shipped 64 extras and this nearly came back to haunt them.

Short was a little unlucky to be dismissed as he drilled one back only for Orchard to hang on to the chance.

Brixham continued to mix the sublime with the ridiculous as they sent down 49 wides and no balls, but still managed to make Wellington 66-6 in just 16 overs.

Luke Desave played a fine knock of 24 with 5 fours as he mounted a fightback – he and Rob Moysey added 36 for the seventh wicket and got the Red and Blacks into three figures territory.

Moysey with 19 and Ali Bunce with a gritty knock that realised 9 kept Brixham in the field for longer than they had expected to be, but at 140-9 still with 12 overs to go Wellington were on the rack somewhat, but last pair George Hooper and Adrian Lee added a vital 36 runs to get Wellington to 176 all out; Hooper made 22 and Lee 12no as they made Brixham sweat – Hooper with 3 fours and Lee with 2 frustrated the home side for 6.4 overs and added gloss to the Wellington effort.

Orchard with 3-17 and Upham with 2-7 were Brixham’s best bowlers in what had been a strange time in the field for them.

Luke Desave bowled an excellent seven over burst as he swung the ball both ways and was a real handful in taking 1-26 – a catch in the covers from James Bath gave him reward.

Adrian Lee was superb for Wellington as he took 2-16 in 7.5 overs and so nearly pulled it off for Wellington in his second spell; Northcott with a brutal 81 was the difference between the two sides, but when Lee caught him at short fine leg after his sweep shot went wrong off of Paul Short the game swung towards Wellington as the rate rose and wickets started to be lost by Brixham.

Catches by Paul Short, Ali Bunce and George Hooper brought Wellington to within sight of a tight victory and with Adrian Lee taking a last over wicket things were on a knife edge, but with two balls left Coysh whipped a ball off his legs to the backward square leg boundary to give Brixham a two wicket victory; one that they deserved overall, but one that they made harder than it should have been – Wellington put in a great shift in the field and with the ball and can carry that forward.

Wellington Sunday XI 212-9 Taunton Deane Sunday XI 195

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

Wellington Sunday XI made it two wins in two from the first weekend of the 2011 season when they took a seventeen run win away from the Convent Field on Sunday in a good match against WEPL Premier One club Taunton Deane.

Paul Short opted to bat on winning the toss and produced a team showing some of the new players that Wellington have signed for the new season; it was one of these – Charlie Davies, who has joined from Taunton St Andrews, who opened up with Short – after a tight start from Leech and Derbe for the County Town club Short was first to go when his pull shot did not go as planned and he was caught by the keeper.

Davies batted in a fine way and dropped anchor to guide Wellington to a good score as he made a fine debut knock of 45 with six fours and a six, Marc Holloway was timing the ball delightfully before been LBW for 19 and James Bath cracked 25 in good time before been stumped off of leg spinner Ashton.

At 119-6 Wellington were in need of something in this 45 over a side game and it came from the ever reliable Rob Moysey and another new signing; this time Ali Bunce who has joined from North Petherton, they added 84 vital runs for the seventh wicket with Moysey making 28 and Bunce 40 with two huge sixes included – they got Wellington past 200 and this were vital runs it proved.

Sam Murdock, Adrian Lee and Jake Nichol all did their bit to see that Wellington had made a good 212-9 at tea.

Taunton Deane’s openers Hudd and Axon benefited from each been dropped, but when Paul Short held on to a fine low catch off of Rob Moysey to remove Axon for 19 the door was open; Wellington used its extensive spin attack to prize out wickets at regular intervals as Ali Bunce showed with his fine analysis of 9-1-21-2 as he gave nothing away and rattled through his overs, giving such little time to the batsmen to settle.

Rob Moysey got Shaikh to sweep at one and only succeed at spearing the ball high in the air for Aks Latifi to pouch a catch; with fellow Bangladeshi Umar Farooq doing lots with the spinning ball in taking 3-29 in 9 overs Wellington had Taunton Deane at 119-7 in 32 overs and still nearly one hundred runs short of the target, but Leech and Derbe added a fine 63 for the eighth Deane wicket and this always made Wellington think the game could yet slip away, but Paul Short removed any doubt when he bowled Ashton with three balls of the game left to seal a good win for the Red and Blacks.

Wellington Sunday XI 198-8 Trull 111-7

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

Wellington Sunday XI opened the new season with a good 87 run win at Somerset League Division Five side Trull last Saturday when a solid performance with both bat and ball came to the fore.

Trull asked Wellington to bat first and when they took a wicket in the second over this looked like a good decision, but Kevin Crout and Thom Trott added 41 for the second wicket before Crout was run out at the bowler’s end going for a quick single.

Trott hit 33 with six fours and a six before been caught; this brought Liam Kubicki (24) and George Hooper (19) together and they crafted a good stand of 41 for the fourth wicket that took Wellington towards three figures.

The Red and Blacks were struggling somewhat at 126-7, but skipper Simon Rudd counterattacked well by making 61no with eight fours and two sixes; he shared stands of 31 with Steve Symons and 41 with Sam Baycock as Wellington got to within two runs of 200 at tea. Trull’s best bowler was Spurway with 2-38 in 8 overs.

Trull never really threatened to make the 199 required and Wellington bowled tightly to make sure that was the case throughout their time in the field.

Adrian Lee with 3-18 in 8 overs delivered in two spells was the most successful bowler for Wellington on the day; his new ball partner George Hooper did well too.

There were two wickets for George Coate who took 2-9 in five overs; he pocketed two catches as well.

Alex Troake and Sam Baycock provided the spin options on the day and bowled well as they let just 33 runs go in 11 overs combined.

New signing Luke Desave bowled swiftly in his four over burst and looks in good shape having joined the Club in the close season and there was a welcome burst from Thom Trott too.

Wellington ran out as 87 run winners and this was a good workout for all involved.
