Sunday and Midweek XI Fixtures 2012

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

Fixture Secretary Steve Symons is working towards completing the WCC Sunday and Midweek XI fixture lists for 2012; our Sunday League schedule is complete and is available on this website already.

Our Sunday Non League and Midweek schedule is well advanced and will be posted when Steve says to do so.

We also look forward to welcoming Somerset Dragons to our facilities in 2012; the Dragons are a branch of the SCCC Disabled squad and they will be playing at WCC on Sunday 3rd June (when the Sunday XI are playing at North Perrott) and on other dates as can be fitted in depending on our Club arrangements.

Wellington Midweek XI 203-4 Spar Ramblers 149

Sunday, August 14th, 2011
Wellington Midweek XI ended their season with a 54 run win over touring side Spar Ramblers – who draw on players from Norfolk, Kent and Worcestershire – last Friday afternoon when weather made their match a 30 over a side affair.

Wellington’s innings was moulded by the excellent 101no that Charlie Davies made – his second non league ton of the season for the Red and Blacks; he hit ten fours and a six in a top innings.

Ali Bunce with 43 excellent runs of his own added 103 for the third wicket after coming in on a hat trick ball as P.Crowhurst with 2-35 did good work for Spar.

Latterly Leo Goodman-Jones and Sam Murdock with 10 and 13no respectively did what was needed to get Wellington over 200 and Davies to his ton which he got to with two fours from the last ball of the innings.

For Spar Orman laid into the short ball with power and the tourists were rocking along at eight an over, although Sam Murdock (3-45) and George Hooper (1-27) did get wickets too for Wellington.

Teasdale with 38 hit eight fours and was looking very menacing, but Simon Rudd calmed matters with a fine six over spell of medium paced swing bowling that realised 3-17 and put paid to an away win, Chris Rudd took a wicket in his three over effort.

It was left to Ali Bunce to end the game with 3.4 overs to go as he captured the last two Spar wickets in three balls to give Wellington a good win.

Brompton Ralph 130-5 Wellington Midweek XI 131-1

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Wellington Midweek XI completed their 20/20 evening fixtures for this season with this thumping nine wicket win over West Somerset League leaders Brompton Ralph last Thursday evening when a great team performance in the field and a robust batting performance brought them victory with over four overs left.

Wellington asked Brompton to bat first and George Hooper was in action second ball as he removed home skipper Mullens for a duck, in taking 2-14 in 4 overs Hooper bowled his fast medium pace well on a pitch offering bounce.

Graham Sparks delivered another competent and miserly spell of medium pace and Brompton had not sped away as they had wished to; although Cruikshank made 35 it was a slow affair as Sam Baycock delivered his left arm spin well once more and took 1-26.

Alex Sparks and Marc Holloway bowled at the time in the Brompton innings when the bat was being wielded as Takle with 34 did his best to raise his side’s score, but when he was well caught by Simon Rudd on the boundary at deep cover the Brompton innings did not make many more and ended on 130-5.

Wellington rushed towards the total required as Simon Rudd and Aks Latifi added 121 opening wicket runs in 13 overs with Latifi cracking four sixes in his fine knock of 80 and Rudd 32no; Leo Goodman-Jones with 9no saw the game out for Wellington as they won with a wide.

The team has one more game left this season and will entertain Norfolk tourists Spar Ramblers on Friday 12th August from 2.00pm; details from Marc Holloway.

Wellington Midweek XI 236-7 The Journeymen 162

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

Wellington Midweek XI recorded a 74 run win over old friends The Journeymen last Monday when a great all round team performance saw the team win with thirteen balls to spare.

The visitors put Wellington in on winning the toss and through Morland’s decent opening spell were 23-2 in seven overs, but skipper Marc Holloway and Chris Rudd reacted to this situation by adding 79 for the third wicket as they ground down the Journeymen’s attack with regular singles and twos that kept the Wellington run rate going along nicely.

Rudd had made 40 and the three figures had come up for Wellington when he was bowled.

Charlie Davies joined Holloway and they put their foot down as 134 runs came Wellington’s way in the last fourteen overs of their innings with Holloway making 102 in fine style and Davies a powerful 25.

Aks Latifi was ready made for quick runs late on and made 41no as Wellington made 236-7 at tea; Morland with 4-44 in 10 overs was Journeymen’s best bowler by far.

N.Bloch made another fifty against Wellington and in tandem with Gibson added 60 runs first up for Journeymen, but needing six an over they were well behind the required rate despite their wickets in hand and it was Simon Rudd who removed Gibson for 29; he then proceeded to take six more wickets to end with 7-31 in 10 overs as his medium paced swing and seam were too much for the visiting side.

Paul Short spun one through Redfern’s defences and then it was left to Charlie Davies and James Dyke – back from Thailand for a short visit – to end the game with a wicket each and to bring down the curtain on a good game.

Thanks go to all who cleared down from the previous day’s Club Day and catered for those who played in this match – showcasing Wellington CC at its very best.

Ashbrittle Midweek XI 147-7 Wellington Midweek XI 138-7

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Wellington nearly carried this friendly 20/20 home with them with a spirited final partnership, but they ended just nine runs short when they took on Ashbrittle at Appley last Thursday evening.

Tom Venner-Woodcock was the fulcrum of the home side’s effort with the bat as he smashed 73 runs in fine style with three successive sixes late on, Chris Hill with 20 and Alfie Venner-Woodcock with 33 got Ashbrittle to a good position with a couple of overs to go, but Tom Baycock pulled the home side up as the last over saw him take four wickets for no cost in six balls to end with 5-22 in 4 overs, earlier he had taken a wicket with a no ball.

Max Capaldi, Sam Baycock and Graham Sparks had bowled very well for Wellington mid-innings and the Red and Blacks needed 148 to win.

Rob Hill took two wickets early, but Charlie Davies and Alex Sparks took Wellington to 70-2 in ten overs and they were well placed to carry on, but Sparks was caught for 26 and this saw Wellington lose three wickets for no score to replicate Ashbrittle.

Max Capaldi joined Davies in the middle and got Wellington going once more and the score into the 90s before Capaldi feathered one behind to the keeper; Davies brought up his fifty with a six, but was bowled for 54 next ball.

Adrian Lee and Tom Baycock added 35 for the eighth Wellington wicket and they were closing in on Ashbrittle’s total, but it was just out of reach with Baycock making 21no and Lee 10no.
