Wellington Midweek XI recorded a 74 run win over old friends The Journeymen last Monday when a great all round team performance saw the team win with thirteen balls to spare.
The visitors put Wellington in on winning the toss and through Morland’s decent opening spell were 23-2 in seven overs, but skipper Marc Holloway and Chris Rudd reacted to this situation by adding 79 for the third wicket as they ground down the Journeymen’s attack with regular singles and twos that kept the Wellington run rate going along nicely.
Rudd had made 40 and the three figures had come up for Wellington when he was bowled.
Charlie Davies joined Holloway and they put their foot down as 134 runs came Wellington’s way in the last fourteen overs of their innings with Holloway making 102 in fine style and Davies a powerful 25.
Aks Latifi was ready made for quick runs late on and made 41no as Wellington made 236-7 at tea; Morland with 4-44 in 10 overs was Journeymen’s best bowler by far.
N.Bloch made another fifty against Wellington and in tandem with Gibson added 60 runs first up for Journeymen, but needing six an over they were well behind the required rate despite their wickets in hand and it was Simon Rudd who removed Gibson for 29; he then proceeded to take six more wickets to end with 7-31 in 10 overs as his medium paced swing and seam were too much for the visiting side.
Paul Short spun one through Redfern’s defences and then it was left to Charlie Davies and James Dyke – back from Thailand for a short visit – to end the game with a wicket each and to bring down the curtain on a good game.
Thanks go to all who cleared down from the previous day’s Club Day and catered for those who played in this match – showcasing Wellington CC at its very best.
