Wellington U13 finished their league campaign in style with a hard-fought 5 run victory against long time league leaders Brompton Ralph on Sunday morning.
Wellington captain Olly Rowe won his first toss of the season and chose to bat first on a scorching Sunday morning.
Wellington’s opening pair of Max White & Joe Fox made a solid start of 19 runs but, in reality, this should have been a lot more as there were a number of missed opportunities.
Ryan Henwood and Alex Bartram were next to the crease and, although they never looked to be in trouble against the bowling, the running between the wickets left something to be desired and resulted in some hairy moments.
The innings really gathered momentum with the introduction of Callum Vernon and Charlie Burroughs who proceeded to send the ball to all corners of the ground and took the score up to 260.
This momentum was carried on by Josh Hawkings and Olly Rowe who continued in the same vein to give Wellington a total of 304 from their 20 overs.
Brompton Ralph’s response got off to a flying start with the opening pair putting on 35 in their 5 overs.
The scoreboard kept ticking over throughout the innings and they were always up with the required run rate.
This was helped by some wayward bowling from Wellington who sent down a total of 24 wides throughout the innings.
Coming into the final over, Brompton Ralph needed 15 to win, and Josh Hawkings was given the responsibility of bowling it.
Good tight straight bowling kept the batsmen in check and, despite a couple of lusty blows, Brompton could only get 9 from it and finished on 299 runs.
This was a great game by both sides played in scorching conditions and was a fitting end to Wellingtons league campaign this year.
