Taunton St Andrews Sunday XI 186-8 Wellington Sunday XI 187-3

Sunday, August 21st, 2011
This was a stunning run chase by Wellington Sunday XI who beat Taunton St Andrews for the first time since 2007 and with it took 24 points from this Taunton and District Sunday League Section A match at home last weekend and repaired a lot of the damage done by the high scoring defeat at Minehead the weekend before.

TSA opted to bat first on what was a good pitch, but they never truly got going as 143-8 was transformed into a final 186-8 through Wyatt with a well made 75no and J.Chandler with 16no adding 43 for the ninth wicket.

George Hooper and Sam Murdock got Wellington amongst the wickets early as Murdock got J.Poole to play on and then got the big wicket when Alley smashed a square cut to Aks Latifi at point and was gone first ball. Murdock took 2-40 in seven good overs.

Hooper did a lot with the ball and gained some alarming movement at times; his reward was when James Bath held on to a chance behind the sticks to see off Barrett for 27.

Wyatt with 75no and T.Chandler with 28 added 40 for TSA’s fourth wicket, but they fell away again after drinks when Chris Shapland angled one across Dimond who edged behind.

Ali Bunce with 2-23 in six overs was good value as his off spinning darts teased and tightened the grip that Wellington had and when Rob Moysey and Alex Troake took a wicket each TSA were 143-8 and had fallen away badly – Wyatt and J.Chandler added some gloss with 43 runs for the ninth wicket, but 186-8 was a low score all things considered.

Wellington screamed away as TSA’s opening attack of Alley and L.Poole got a wicket each, but TSA were wayward too as 22 wides and no ball shows; James Bath enhanced his reputation with a quality knock of 78 after keeping wicket well earlier; he hit 2 big sixes as well as eight fours and played seam and spin equally well as he withstood the WEPL Premier One club’s attack, adding 150 third wicket runs with Charlie Davies who made 57no against his old Club as he too played solidly when he had to and despatched the bad ball when it came along.

Wellington dominated this match and took much from it and have two Sunday League matches to play – away to Chard on Sunday 4th September and at Taunton St Andrews on Saturday 10th September.

Wellington Sunday XI 264 Minehead Sunday XI 267-5

Monday, August 15th, 2011

The bat was king as Wellington resumed their Taunton and District Sunday League Division A campaign with a run of four matches in the last month of the season and they fought all the way when they visited WEPL Bristol and Somerset side Minehead last weekend, but came away with a five wicket defeat in a game that saw 531 runs scored in 79 overs.

Paul Short won the toss and opted to bat first as Minehead applied a tight rein on things through Hayes and Buchanan and Wellington were one down at the end of the first over; Aks Latifi and James Bath added 56 for the second wicket as the runs started to flow all round the arena – Bath played the square cut well on his way to 30 before playing on to Hayes who, with 3-34 in seven overs, was excellent for Minehead.

Latifi indulged in a glorious exhibition of hitting as he smacked 102 with seven sixes and he is bearing down on breaking the six hits record again just twelve months after establishing it! – he hit the ball with power and reduced the Minehead attack to rubble at times as he added 137 fourth wicket runs with Paul Short who made a fine 80 himself as he played square of the wicket in a most pleasing fashion.

Wellington chipped away to make 264 all out at tea.

With a dry pitch and inviting distances to breach Minehead started their reply in the sort of form that Wellington had dished things out in as Squire with 47 was in danger of eclipsing Latifi with the distance he could hit the ball in; he and Tudball had added 100 for the opening Minehead wicket when Sam Murdock got him to play on.

J.Hurley joined Tudball and despite struggling against Rob Moysey and Paul Short and the spinning ball he held firm to make 42; Wellington were guilty of dropping catches and been ‘behind the eight ball’ at times in the field as Minehead collected singles at will.

Tudball made 111no as he made a classy ton, but there was still work to do for the home side as Sam Murdock came back for a second burst and collected four more wickets to take 5-35 all told, but a four from Minehead keeper Sidley-Adams with an over to go saw the Seasiders to 23 points and Wellington to 12.

Wellington entertain Taunton St Andrews next Sunday from 2.00pm.
