Rain washed away the chance of a result in this Taunton and District Sunday League Division A match at Chard last weekend when two of the sides in with a chance of honours played out a good game that was sadly denied the chance of going to a conclusion.
Chard – with their splendid new Clubhouse in action and promotion of their 1st XI to WEPL Premier Two for next season achieved – lost the toss and saw Rob Moysey and Max Capaldi use the good batting track to full affect as they added 62 first Welington wicket.
Capaldi was severe on the overpitched ball and was looking good for more runs after his 158no for Wellington 2nd XI the previous weekend when he was trapped LBW for 31 to S.Dening who took 1-15 in seven good overs of left arm orthodox spin.
Scott Davey cover drove well three times in making 15, but when he was stumped off of Durrance (5-31) Wellington’s innings stagnated although Moysey was still at the crease as Chard delivered a better second twenty overs than they had in the first session before drinks.
Moysey had made 72 when he was bowled by Durrance who was another slow left arm spinner to do well on the day.
Ali Bunce with 31 gave Wellington some late impetus as he and Aaron Chugg added 34 eighth wicket runs and full batting points were narrowly missed.
Will Hinchcliffe took a wicket when he trapped J.Hayes LBW, but this brought the hard hitting Wells-Burr to the crease and he smashed four sixes in making 76 as Chard had to contend with the rain that was advancing and having to change their game plan.
Paul Short bowled Wells-Burr with the score on 133 after he and H.Dening had added 123 for the Chard second wicket; by now the rain was falling and saw Chard’s innings take a backward step as Rob Moysey took two wickets and although Scott drove the last ball of the 26th over for four to leave Chard needing 49 in 14 overs to win the umpires took the players from the field and the ground was awash not long after.
Chard took 12 points from the game and Wellington 11; both have one match to play with Wellington travelling to Taunton St Andrews on Saturday 10th September for a 1.00pm start and Chard go to Bridgwater on Sunday 11th September.
Chard hold a five point advantage over Wellington (119-114) and both have 25 points to play for, so much could happen still – either way Wellington will be playing at this level again next season and that is a fine achievement in itself.
