Wellington and a Taunton Deane team met in one of the two Baker Cup related competitions as has been the case often in the past few seasons last Monday evening and it was the County Town team who made it to the first round proper of the Baker Cup for 2012, but only by one wicket with just three balls to spare and Wellington had chance to have won the game too.
Paul Short was the mainstay of the Wellington innings as the skipper made a capital 41 that saw some great running between the wickets and with some hard hit boundaries thrown in for good measure; he was well supported by Aks Latifi and Charlie Davies.
Luke Desave and Neil Hendy made more useful runs and at 88-5 Wellington were hoping for around 100 as a final score, but the loss of five wickets for just one run in the last over to Thomas who took 4-17 saw that Taunton Deane 2nd XI would need 90 to win.
They did not start well as Luke Desave and Thom Trott made them 13-3 and then the Deane were at 44-7 and in all sorts of bother; Trott took 3-11 in 4 overs and Desave 4-29 in 5.
Rob Moysey and Paul Short bowled well, but the 29 that Squire made always kept Taunton Deane in the game and although two wickets were taken when the Deane’s score was in the eighties they were always just ahead of the game and their last man Thomas hit a six from his first ball to end the game and earn Taunton Deane 2nd XI a home match with Chard on Monday 28th May.
Wellington now enter the Terry Mockridge Memorial Shield and their opposition will be known at the end of the month.

Wellington Sunday XI made it a good weekend for the Club when it won by ten wickets against Staplegrove last weekend having despatched last season’s Somerset League champion club for just 57 in 27 overs.
Jake Nichol bowled well for a second Sunday running as he took 2-31 in eight good overs that saw him probe a good off stump line having corrected his early leg stump leaning.
Simon Rudd helped himself to a caught and bowled to see the back of Lawrence as the Taunton side did not get to grips with the low bounce.
Charlie Davies had a rare bowl, but his left arm spin was potent as he bowled J.Pantling for 14.
Arron Campbell and Robin Davies finished matters off with their off spin and left arm chinaman styles with 3-6 and 2-3 doing the trick for Wellington to see 58 would be needed to win.
Although the pitch was good to bowl on it was not easy to keep on and James Bath deserves credit for his efforts behind the stumps for Wellington.
Charlie Davies with 28no and Aks Latifi with 26no got Wellington over the line in 17.3 overs and this concluded a good weekend for the Red and Blacks.

Wellington 2nd XI edged home by 33 runs to an opening Somerset League Division Four win last weekend when their first ever points encounter against a first team went their way.
Having been put into bat it was skipper Richard Henwood who top scored for a second week running as he made 27 at the top of the order.
Mark Salter with 20 played a steady hand as did Darren Davis with 15, but the four wickets each for Phillips and S.Bellringer saw that Wellington were despatched for 121 in 41 overs with Neil Hendy’s 19no about to take on a big part in the game.
Adrian Lee was superb with 4-6 in 8 overs as he and Scott Davey (2-38) reduced last season’s Division Five champions to 21-6 and in all sorts of bother although their skipper R.Bellringer with 32 was playing well.
Tom Baycock and Darren Davis dislodged and thus ended a 38 run seventh wicket stand that had brought Fitzhead back into the game – 29 more runs came, but so did the end of Fitzhead’s innings with 17.1 overs left and that they lost by just 33 runs shows that they were close to victory and so this must go down as a fine win for Wellington 2nd XI.
The team face the long trek to Frome this weekend.
