Rackenford 118-2 Wellington 104

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Rackenford have a sixteen point lead over Wellington in the Cougar Indoor League following their 14 run win over the Red and Blacks last weekend in the meeting of the top two.

Wellington conceded more extras than they would have wished to as they leaked more runs than in any other game so far this winter season with Rackenford making 118-2 in 10 overs.

Neil Hendy got the two wickets to fall as he got the new ball to swing and got an LBW and a man bowled for his efforts, but that was all the success that was forthcoming to Wellington with the ball.

A good start was necessary, but a wicket was lost second ball; Paul Short and Aks Latifi reacted well as Short glided the ball around the arena well and Latifi played well off the walls and both retired and so were able to come back.

Kevin Crout – making a first Cougar indoor appearance – did good work too with the bat for Wellington, but the rate was always a little too high and despite the efforts of Short (33) and Latifi (36) Wellington were all out in the last over 15 short of victory.

The team has one game left before Christmas and will play Bridgwater Sports on Sunday 12th December at 3.30pm.

The Club hosts its seasonal Sports Quiz on the same date from 7.30pm and applications for teams to enter are now closed.

Curry Rivel 103 Wellington 106-3

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

Wellington recorded a fine Cougar Cricket Indoor League win at Wellington School last weekend when the younger players in the side played a big part in securing the win over the current league leaders Curry Rivel.

Wellington opted to have a rare bowl first and found Manley and Wilkes in good form with the bat for Curry before Neil Hendy got a ball to swing and dip late on and this saw Wilkes trapped LBW.

Manley retired and came back to be last out, but Wellington kept going well and chipped away at the Curry Rivel line up to bowl them out in the last over – Richard Henwood got the ball to swing well as Hendy had done earlier and an LBW decision came his way too, Sam Murdock claimed a wicket when he bowled Jupp by hitting off and middle stump and James Bath – on indoor debut – kept wicket well generally and effected two run outs as well to see Wellington would need 104 to win in 10 overs.

Paul Short and Neil Hendy got Wellington away to a good start and had 27 on the board in three overs before Hendy was run out looking for a quick single and when Richard Henwood was out bowled Wellington were looking at Paul Short at the crease and an inexperienced line up to come, but James Bath and Sam Murdock later on did so much to help Wellington win as Bath made 29no with his skipper who retired at 25no – Bath swept the ball well and worked it off the wall too as the required total came into view for the Red and Blacks, Murdock had the pleasure of hitting the winning runs as Wellington won with two balls left and now face Rackenford on Sunday 28th November from 11.30am.

Wellington 91-5 Stogumber 92-5

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

Wellington lost a dramatic high octane game of indoor cricket at Wellington School last Sunday when Stogumber – who will be one of their Somerset League opponents in 2011 – got home by one wicket and with one ball to spare.

Paul Short and Neil Hendy got Wellington’s innings underway well before Short was run out leaving Hendy who retired and came back to be the backbone of the Wellington innings; Richard Henwood made good runs as did Thom Trott and latterly Aks Latifi and Sam Murdock got Wellington to 91-5 in ten overs; maybe ten or so short of where Wellington would have liked to be ideally.

Stogumber lost wickets early as Neil Hendy claimed two wickets in his first over with a run out and an LBW shout going for Wellington and Richard Henwood probed the right lines, but all the time Weetch was getting going for Stogumber and he held his side together – Sam Murdock claimed two wickets including that of Weetch, but the last over went the way of Stogumber as some kitchen sink style shots got them over the line – just.

Wellington took nine points and are next in action on Sunday 31st October at 2.30pm against Blagdon Hill – remember the clocks go back on that date!

All associated with the Club are reminded that the 2010 Dinner and Dance will take place at Somerset County Cricket Club on Saturday 30th October with a 6.30pm for 7.00pm dinner arrangement – confirmed numbers are approaching three figures, so if you have not confirmed your ticket requirements (£25 senior and £20 Under 16s)and menu choices yet then please contact Club Chairman Duncan Short on 01823 667325 or via e-mail on Duncan.Short@towergate.co.uk – votes for Players Player for the 1st and 2nd XIs are also still invited.

Wellington 101-4 Sampford Arundel 92-4

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

Wellington and Sampford Arundel got the 2010-2011 Cougar Cricket Indoor League season underway at Wellington School on Sunday morning and the Red and Blacks recorded their first indoor win over Sampford Arundel for some time as they held sway by a margin of nine runs following some good tight bowling late on.

Sampford Arundel asked Wellington to bat on winning the toss and saw that Paul Short and Neil Hendy were both run out within the first three overs and Sampford were in the ascendancy through Pete Kittow and Laurence Burns who had taken the new ball.

Richard Henwood made a cautious 25no and retired for Wellington as he worked the ball well around the arena, but had to be mindful that his side could ill afford to lose any more wickets.

Michael Gill made 24 good runs before been caught off the wall in the last over and when Aks Latifi was run out off the last ball of the Wellington innings the Red and Blacks had made 101-4 in 1o overs – a decent rate.

For Sampford Arundel all their bowlers did a good job as Seb Coe and Vince Milton showed mid innings.

Dave Kittow and Vince Milton got Sampford off to a good start, although Neil Hendy had a couple of fine LBW shouts in his three overs.

Kittow and Milton got their side into the forties when Milton was caught off the ceiling off of Michael Gill; Seb Coe came into bat and worked the ball to leg very well, but Wellington contained the Sampford line up well with a well marshalled back line and some great wicket to wicket bowling from Richard Henwood and Sam Murdock that saw the rate rise and with 23 needed from the last over only 14 runs came the way of Sampford Arundel and Wellington took 19 points to Arundel’s eight.

Wellington next play on Sunday 17th October at 12.30pm against Stogumber. Contact Paul Short for details
