Past Players Association AGM and Lunch 2016 – Formal Report
Wellington Cricket Club’s Past Players Association held its fifth Annual General Meeting and Lunch for Members and Guests last Saturday when the Club’s 1st XI hosted Staplegrove CC and good weather and attendance made for another excellent event writes Association Member David Derrick.
The meeting itself was a jovial affair attended by some dozen members and was presided over by Association President Keith Colman who gave opening remarks that noted that Association Members Simon Spalding and Simon Rudd had been awarded Life Membership of the Parent Club earlier in the year and to this end this was a deserved achievement by two people who were both past Club Captains and had given much and still do to the Club’s cause over many years.
An effective event was on offer with the catering side of the day having, once more, been looked after by Association Treasurer Chris Rudd who had once more come up trumps with the quality of the meal that was going to be on offer.
Bar and Clubhouse Manager Amanda Moysey was thanked for preparing the venue for the event and involved with the preparation of the food were Judith Short, Steph Colman and Gemma Rudd who did a sterling job as they catered for nearly fifty persons.
The ethos of the Association featured in the President’s speech and he was pleased to be able to report that it was as strong now as it was when the Association was founded in 2012.
2016 was seen as being a year of consolidating the Association’s finances and building up cash reserves that will ultimately be used to support the Club itself when it feels it has a need for some investment in a capital expenditure project.
The review of the past twelve months was presented by Association Secretary Matt Colman and he noted, amongst other things, that a membership uplift was still a core aim of the Officers, three events had been held in 2015 under the Association’s name, that a first Committee Member had been recruited and that the Association now had a social media presence.
Plans for 2016 after this event were to undertake two playing opportunities – these would be against a Club Chairman’s XI in a T20 challenge match on Thursday 2nd June and as part of the sides that play in the Club Day on Sunday 10th July.
The ever-popular Away Day at Somerset CCC was set for Sunday 7th August when Durham CCC are the visitors and an Evening Barbecue event will be held on Saturday 23rd July when the 1st XI’s entertains Frome CC – this will commence from 6.30pm
Chris Rudd gave a positive finance report that showed that, since inception, the Association had donated £525 to the Club and a solid cash balance was held too.
All current Officers were re-elected en bloc and the Committee was added to by the election of Ashley Colman as a second Committee Member; Association Officers are now
President – Keith Colman
Secretary – Matt Colman
Treasurer – Chris Rudd
Committee Members – Paul Rowlandson and Ashley Colman
Club Chairman Duncan Short spoke on behalf of the Club to end the meeting and thanked the Association for their support in the five seasons since formation; he added that 2016 is the 70th season since the Club was reformed after WW2 and that it was a special season all round and he hoped that Association members would involve themselves in what was going on at the Club during the season.
After the meeting had been closed a generous two course lunch was enjoyed by a good number of Association members and guests alike.
