The Secretary has attended a Management Committee meeting of the Somerset Cricket League this evening and has been presented with the divisional structure that the SCL will be using in 2011; our hopes of the 1st XI gaining promotion to the Somerset Division of the WEPL have been dashed as relegation from the Bristol and Somerset Division to the Somerset Division (Midsomer Norton CC) and from the Somerset Division to SCL Division One (North Perrott CC) has been confirmed as taking place per the published schedule, so only one side (SCL champions Westlands CC) will leave the SCL.
However in recognition of the two second places achieved by our SCL sides in 2010, two excellent Sportsmanship Award scores and general good conduct we have been awarded the SCL Merit Trophy.
The trophy will be presented at the SCL Dinner and Dance that will take place at The Shrubbery Hotel, Ilminster on Friday 15th October.

Wellington Sunday XI completed both theirs and the Club’s season with their first ever Sunday defeat at Langport following seven successive wins at Field Road, but that did not dampen a successful season all round for the side in both league and friendly competition.
Wellington skipper Steve Symons opted to bat first and was rewarded with a fine opening stand of 71 between Trevor Brooks and Rob Moysey who laid into the short ball well as the Langport attack continually dug the ball in or overpitched and this gave Wellington many run scoring opportunities and they were taken.
Moysey was first out to a great caught and bowled effort from P.Chalmers who was good value with the ball as he went for just 27 runs in eight overs.
Aks Latifi joined Brooks – who by now had made it to and past 50 – and he thundered four more sixes in a knock of 44 that took Wellington towards 150 with only one down, but when Latifi was caught at square leg Wellington’s innings fell away as they were bowled out for 169 with an over left – Brooks made a fine 74, but only Will Hinchcliffe with 14 made an impression after that as Buchanan and Strang each took three wickets for Langport.
Sam Murdock got rid of Grimstead early on when he chopped one on to his stumps and George Coate trapped J.Brookham LBW to make Langport 43-2, but Crossley, who had made a ton against Wellington 2nd XI back in July, made a fine 81 not out and with Paul (44) and P.Chalmers (17no) saw Langport to only their second Sunday win over Wellington in eight seasons.
There was a wicket for Sam Baycock, but Langport got home with overs and wickets to spare and took the honours on the day.
The two record breakers who set new standards last weekend – Rob Moysey and Aks Latifi – ended with 86 wickets and 39 sixes respectively all told and these are new Club records for a season’s performance; well done to both players.

Although the 2010 season is now almost over (one game to play this Sunday at Langport) it would be really good to keep everyone together over the close season; obviously we have the Dinner and Dance in October, but ideas for other events at The Long Hop Bar are a Curry Night, a Quiz Night and a Poker Night and these events will be developed going forward.
If you have any ideas for close season entertainment then please advise the Chairman or Secretary via the usual channels.

Sunday 19th September – North Curry v North Petherton
Sunday, September 12th, 2010
Wellington Sunday XI brought the curtain down on a most successful season in Division B of the Taunton and District Sunday League with this five wicket win at Somerset League Division Two club North Newton last weekend that saw the side secure 24 points and end the season just seven points behind divisional champions Taunton St Andrews.

North Newton – who went into the game in third place – opted to bat first on winning the toss and took first use of a very green track and may have regretted that decision as Adrian Lee removed Newton skipper Cook and H.Marchant within the first over of the game.
Sam Murdock made it worse for Newton as he saw W.Marchant back to the pavilion and at 3-3 the home side were in deep, deep trouble.
But they rallied and rallied well with Stone, White and Sellick all doing very well in the middle order making 32, 28 and 29 respectively as they hit the short ball that Wellington’s spinners delivered a little too often well and at 94-4 with Sellick and Stone in good form and with Newton having 15 overs left they were looking at over 150 on a pitch that was not going to get easier to bat on after tea.
But Sam Baycock and Alex Troake fought back and got rid of White and Sellick through great catches on the run by Rob Moysey and Marc Holloway as Wellington got their noses back in front and saw North Newton at 108-9 in 32 overs and just one wicket was needed; A.Kyte and Barham prolonged things a little for the home side as they added 17 last wicket runs, but Marc Holloway and Liam Kubicki – with his first wicket for the Club – sorted things out to see that Wellington would need 126 to win after tea.
Michael Gill – in his last game for Wellington, although he is to remain in the area until November – cracked two fine square cuts from the first and third balls of Jenkins’ first over, but was run out by a fine throw from Stone in the gully.
Aks Latifi and James Bath with a 21 run second wicket offering steadied things for Wellington with Bath square cutting well before been trapped LBW and with another wicket going at 43 it was a case of ‘you never know’ for Wellington, but the excellent Scott Davey – who has had a fine last six weeks or so with the bat – did a fine job for his side with 34 top notch runs and by the time Latifi had been the victim of a fine yorker from Sellick the job was nearly done for Wellington; Davey was last out with the score on 112 and Marc Holloway and Liam Kubicki saw the job was done with 12.1 overs left and with it second place was secured and next season Division A will be the home for the side in the Taunton and District Sunday League.
- The game saw two all time statistical standards broken for Wellington; With his first wicket of the game Rob Moysey broke the overall wickets in a season record that stood at 84 and was posted by Dave Luxton back in 1993, the level is now 86 with one game left and with a six in his innings of 39 Aks Latifi broke Alec Short’s eight year old record of 34 sixes in a season, Latifi has hit 35 sixes this season – again with one game to go.
- One game is left before the 2010 season is finally concluded and that is at SCL Division Three club Langport on Sunday; with a 1.00pm start the team will leave Courtland Road Car Park at 11.45am.
