With lowly Wedmore beating Langport Wellington 2nd XI made up some of the ground that they had lost at Langport the weekend before in Division Two of the Somerset League’s Reserves competition and now the side are 20 points ahead of third placed Langport and 46 points behind leaders Frome.
Wellington were asked to bat first by the bottom side and a steady 47 run opening stand by Trevor Brooks and Kevin Crout got things going in the right way for the home side – this was compiled in 11 overs and was ended when Crout was bowled for 13.
Brooks was within sight of a fifty when he was bowled for 46 with the score on 75 and Wellington were taken into three figures territory by Richard Short and skipper Simon Rudd who made 28 and 55 respectively.
Short gave great support with his highest score of the season as Rudd saw the innings through to the end and was last man out.
Wellington had a reasonable, but not overwhelming 167-9 on the board at tea – for Wells Speed with 3-33 in 12 overs and S.Gooch with 3-4 late on did well with the ball.
Wells have exhibited batting frailty this season and this was on show again as only three of their number got into double figures as Wellington chipped away and got the ten wickets they needed with eight overs left.
Ross Brayley with 3-26 in 11.5 overs was excellent in two spells as he maintained control and accuracy throughout.
Kevin Symons did likewise and got the wicket of Maynard (19) for his efforts.
Simon Rudd with 2-20 and George Coate with 3-13 saw the Wells middle order off and that their number three Harris was left not out on 24 made in 73 balls saw that there was not much support on offer to him.
Wellington took 33 points and Wells 13 points and some of the ground lost by the defeats to Belvedere and Langport has been clawed back – there is another chance to make good at home to Temple Cloud this weekend.
