Wellington Midweek XI 129 Ripley 130-7

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Wellington Midweek XI played their final 20/20 match of the season and lost by three wickets to Surrey tourists Ripley last Thursday evening in a game that was alive to the last over.

Alex Sparks made a capital 64 with two maxima as he carried on his top current batting form – George Coate with 15 and John Paine with 17 gave him good support as Wellington posted a final total of 129 in their 20 overs.

Ripley were indebted to M.Ilks with 42 as he steered the touring side to the brink of the required 130 and despite Rowan Varkevisser and David Derrick claiming a couple of wickets each Ripley rounded off their Somerset tour on an unbeaten note.

Wellington Sunday XI 223-7 Axminster Sunday XI 147-7

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Wellington Sunday XI took a trip back in time when they visited Devon League Division B side Axminster last weekend and had much the better of the draw in a match that was played in the traditional timed format.

Axminster put Wellington into bat on their excellent new ground and David Derrick and Alex Sparks got Wellington going with a 55 run first wicket stand as Derrick did what he does best and held one end firm allowing the in-form Sparks to glide the ball around the ground and play well on both sides of the wicket.

Derrick was first to go when he did not quite get over a square cut and was caught for 12, but the foundations had been laid.

Sparks had planted two over the boundary and was looking good for a third Sunday century of the season when he hit a full toss high to cover and was caught for 66.

Rowan Varkevisser launched into a fine flurry of hitting as he hit eight sixes – four in one over – as he made an excellent 92 and boosted Wellington’s score late on.

Wellington benefited from Aks Latifi’s 21 too as they closed on 223-7 in 39 overs at tea, having lost some time to rain.

Axminster were unlikely to chase the 224 required to win so it became a case of if Wellington had enough in them to get the ten wickets they needed to win in an hour and twenty overs.

No breakthrough came in that first hour despite Jake Nicol, George Hooper and Sam Murdock bowling well and giving nothing away.

Alex Troake joined the attack and with twenty overs to go he produced a double wicket over with Mudane being bowled for 23 and then J.Hayball falling to a George Hooper catch and Wellington were on their way.

Troake took 3-17 in 7 fine overs of leg-spin.

Rowan Varkevisser with 3-9 in four overs bowled with good pace and Wellington were closing in on a good victory, but they could not dislodge Axminster skipper Kiy who made a solid 42no and thus carried his bat.

Jake Nicol tried a second spell and despite bowling excellently in his 12 overs on the day went wicketless as Axminster secured the draw.

Glastonbury 3rd XI 240 Wellington 2nd XI 125

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Wellington 2nd XI were well beaten by the side closest to them in Division One of the Somerset League’s Reserves competition last weekend and with it slide back into the relegation zone after Glastonbury 3rd XI despatched the Red and Blacks second string by 115 runs at Courtland Road last weekend.

Wellington opted to put the Thorns into bat and generally did not bowl and field as well as they can, although the quantity of extras was less than had been the case a week before and they saved themselves having to bowl overs 41-45 as Glastonbury were all out in 40.5 overs.

Their innings was based around Adams and his powerhouse innings of 89.

Wellington did make early incisions with Richard Short and Adrian Lee doing early damage, but Glastonbury – who have now won four in a row after losing each of their first six – got their teeth into the Wellington bowling.

Lee with 3-36 in 12 overs bowled excellently and is in fine form with the ball currently, Short took 3-54 in 10 overs and there were wickets for Jake Nicol (2-47) and Alex Troake (1-43) as well as Wellington took the ten bowling points on offer.

Trevor Brooks and Liam Kubicki added 18 at the top of the Wellington innings, but Glastonbury bowled well with Wade (4-35 in 11 overs) being a particular handful. Kevin Crout with 25 top scored for Wellington with a middle-order offering of 21 from Graham Sparks being useful, but there was just not the long innings of substance on offer from the Red and Blacks and they were dismissed for 125 in 31.2 overs, although George Hooper, David Derrick and Jake Nicol did all add useful runs with Sparks and saw that Wellington added sixteen points to their tally.

North Newton 180-9 Wellington 185-3

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Wellington won when it mattered most as they saw off bottom side North Newton in Division One of the Somerset League last weekend and with it rose one place and out of the relegation zone and with Staplegrove losing at home to Taunton Outcasts, Wellington had a better weekend than they had enjoyed for some time.

North Newton did, however, add 85 for their first wicket through Barham (43) and Cook (39) and they got these runs in 21 overs as Wellington struggled to make an impact, but the excellent Paul Short with 2-38 in 12 overs did the job for his side as he removed both openers – Wellington’s skipper is in fine form with the ball currently.

A freak run out accounted for J.Stone for 18 and from then on in Wellington took control of the game as North Newton slid from 156-2 to 180-9 with Rowan Varkevisser coming to the fore as he took 2-23 and three catches.

Max Capaldi with 4-14 in four overs late on saw that Wellington needed 181 to win and secure a most vital victory.

Wellington cantered home at around six per over as they won by seven wickets with a dozen or so overs to spare.

Paul Short capped a fine game with 80no with ten fours as he and Mark Salter (16) added the thick end of fifty for Wellington’s first wicket.

Alex Sparks with 34 carried things on and Marc Holloway – on his birthday weekend – made a solid 23 and it was Mark Saunders who finished things for Wellington with a six to complete a good day at the office for the Red and Blacks.

Wellington entertain Staplegrove this weekend and need to make it two wins in two.
