Important Fixture News and Update

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

1 – The 1st XI’s match with Westlands CC set for Saturday 25th July will not be played in Yeovil due to another commitment that their ground has. The match will now be played at Compton House Cricket Club, Over Compton, Sherborne, Dorset, DT9 4QU. Please contact the Secretary for further details.

2 – It has not been possible to find a replacement fixture for the Sunday XI for Sunday 26th July. Attention now turns to filling the gap that exists on Sunday 2nd August. If this is not successful then normal Sunday XI activity will resume with a trip to Butleigh CC on Sunday 9th August.

Sunday XI Fixtures – Sunday 26th July and Sunday 2nd August

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Due to issues that our scheduled next two Sunday opponents have encountered there will be a change in the team’s fixtures if suitable arrangements can be made.

Taunton CC are experiencing availability issues and this has already caused them to call off a recent Sunday fixture and South Petherton CC do not have access to their ground on the date we had arranged with them.

Naturally these developments are disappointing, but the early declaration of such facts does assist as we are able to try and source replacement fixtures in good time and that process has now begun.

Look out for a further announcement in the coming days.

Wellington 2nd XI 66 Bishops Lydeard 2nd XI 67-1

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Wellington 2nd XI were well beaten at home to their Bishops Lydeard counterparts last weekend in Division One of the Somerset League’s Reserves competition in a match that was completed in 44.1 overs only.

On a damp pitch whoever won the toss was going to bowl and the visitors won the toss and asked Wellington to bat first and their innings never truly got going – only four of the ten wickets realised a double figure tally and the highest stand of the day for Wellington was that for the last wicket.

Kevin Crout with 36 was the only double figure score for Wellington as he played a lone hand.

For Lydeard Sapey with 4-12 in 12 overs was excellent as he moved and cut the ball a long way off the seam and caused issues all afternoon.

Crowe with 3-12 in 9.3 overs did a job too as Wellington were all out for 66 in 33.2 overs.

Although Graham Sparks took a wicket second ball Lydeard skipper England and former Wellington player Dave Proctor wasted no time in sealing a nine wicket win as they got the runs required in under eleven overs – Proctor hit a powerful 54no – and saw that Lydeard took full points and Wellington just four.

Belvedere 225-5 Wellington 181

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Wellington find themselves back in the relegation zone in Division One of the Somerset League following this 44 run defeat at Belvedere last weekend when coupled with Staplegrove’s win over Temple Cloud.

Wellington asked the Weston-Super-Mare based hosts to bat first and Rowan Varkevisser got rid of Gullick in the seventh over on his way to figures of 1-38 in 10 overs, but it was fifteen overs until another breakthrough came Wellington’s way when Max Capaldi removed Burgess for 24.

But Kolambakar with 56 and R.Tasker with 71 pushed Belvedere towards 200 with a couple of good knocks that saw the home side finish their innings strongly.

Chadwick’s 33 and Dibben’s 21no saw Belvedere post 225-5 at tea in 45 overs as Wellington found themselves needing five an over to win this crucial match.

Wellington skipper Paul Short with 2-64 in 12 overs was the most successful Red and Blacks bowler.

Wellington slumped to 71-7 in 23 overs as the accurate Hosey with 4-23 in 12 fine overs did damage – three starts were made for Wellington, but were not developed.

It was left to Max Capaldi with 41 and Aks Latifi with 58 to revive Wellington’s knock with their 98 run eighth wicket offering – indeed this is a new Club record beating a 33 year-old standard – as they made Belvedere sweat that Wellington could chase the runs down despite their position.

Capaldi hit three fours and a six and Latifi hit seven fours and two sixes, but the fun was ended when Latifi was bowled by Watts (4-46).

Wellington were eventually dismissed for 181 with 2.1 overs left and took fourteen points from the match with Belvedere taking a full 35.

The team are away to Westlands next time out.

Club Day 2009 – Formal Report

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Wellington Cricket Club enjoyed a fine Club Day on Sunday 12th July when all aspects of excellent Club life were brought together for the Club’s annual jamboree.

A good number of members, life members, vice-presidents, sponsors, friends and associates of the Club were present for a wide and varied day of activities.

To start with the Club’s Under 13s side played their Bridgwater counterparts in a Taunton and District Youth League Western Section match – this side, managed by Richard Short, is playing full eleven-a-side cricket for the first time this season and this is seen as a vital and progressive item on the Club’s agenda as it introduces a younger type of player to the ‘whole’ game for the first time – this was a close match, but Bridgwater were victorious.

After this match had concluded Club Chairman Duncan Short called order and summarised the day’s schedule and what was on offer.

Main Club sponsor Hal White of Tiverton Carpets and Suites and Cllr Janet Reed of Wellington Town Council where she is Deputy Town Mayor were introduced to those gathered and Mr Short detailed the help and assistance that they have offered and given to the Club.

Other sponsors present included Chris and Sheena Tooze of SJ Tooze and Sons, Colin and Sheila Perry of Wade and Perry, Andy Perry of Abbey Road Garage, Graham and Debbie Sparks of Graham Sparks Furniture Restoration Services and they were thanked for their generous and vital input into Club life.

Those assembled then tucked into a salad lunch of the highest quality as prepared by the Rudd family – Chris, Simon and Tony – this gets better year on year and this meal was enjoyed by nearly one hundred persons.

Chicken, ham and cheese were the main courses and a range of salads and dressings made this a meal to savour and was finished off with fresh fruit desserts.

The meal was served by Judith Short, Jane Trott and Karen Holloway and the six involved in the lunch deserve many, many thanks.

After lunch a 20/20 match was played between mixed teams captained by Paul Short and Rob Moysey – who celebrated his birthday on the day – and this saw each bowler used bowling two overs, there was some good hitting, bowling and fielding on offer for the large crowd to enjoy.

Thanks go to Dennis Fullstone, Mark Salter, Kevin Symons and Thom Trott for umpiring this match and to the players for serving up an entertaining display.

After clearing up and returning tables and chairs to Wellington Football Club, whose loan of such items is gratefully acknowledged, an evening barbecue run by Judith Short, Jane Trott, Bob Trott and Thom Trott was enjoyed and was an ideal time to enjoy a drink and a burger and reflect on the day just passed and to the excellent social opportunity that such an event both is and offers. Thanks to all who participated, took part and helped on what was an excellent day.

Club Day 2009

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Another superb Club Day was enjoyed by members, guests, vice-presidents, life members, sponsors, friends and associates of the Club last Sunday when all came together to celebrate the Club in full.

From the sumptuous salad lunch prepared by Chris, Simon and Tony Rudd and served by Jane Trott, Karen Holloway and Judith Short to the Under 13s match overseen by Richard Short to the 20/20 match captained by Paul Short and Rob Moysey and umpired by Dennis Fullstone, Mark Salter, Kevin Symons and Thom Trott and the evening barbecue that was prepared and served by Judith Short, Jane Trott, Bob Trott and Thom Trott all went well and was enjoyed by many – some for the first time and this was very pleasing to see.

A full report will follow in due course.

Staplegrove 141-2 v Wellington

Monday, July 13th, 2009

The rain had the final say in this Somerset League Division One match between two of the sides that are looking to get out of the relegation squeeze as it was called off with Staplegrove having faced 35.4 overs and in the end they took nineteen points to Wellington’s fourteen and closed the gap between the two sides to nine points in Wellington’s favour.

In what play was possible Wellington put Staplegrove into bat and saw D.Penny cut loose with a fierce knock of 77 as he accounted for well over half of his side’s runs.

Wellington bowled steadily as Rowan Varkevisser and Paul Short collected a wicket apiece and Simon Rudd, Thom Trott and Max Capaldi backed them up well, but the rain was always going to have the final say and around 4.00pm the umpires took the players off and they did not return.

Wellington 2nd XI 162-4 v Staplegrove 2nd XI

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

The expected rain arrived around 4.00pm as forecast and washed away Wellington 2nd XI’s Somerset League Reserves Competition Division One match at Staplegrove last weekend with the Red and Blacks second string taking a useful twenty points from the game to the host’s sixteen.

Wellington arrived at Manor Road and were greeted with a shower on arrival, but a prompt start was made nonetheless and Wellington were put into bat on losing the toss and found it hard going against a decent home attack early on, but Trevor Brooks and Liam Kubicki held firm and added 55 first wicket runs for Wellington at a rate of 4 an over with the Staplegrove attack been blunted and with dropped catches also occurring this made Wellington more robust.

Kubicki was eventually out for 10 to White (3-20 in 8.3 overs) – he was the pick of the ‘Grove attack.

Trevor Brooks made a capital 82no with 15 fours as he batted for the whole of the 37.3 overs that were possible – with square cuts and pulls been at the forefront of his innings, he played a fine knock.

Richard Short with 52 added 90 for the second wicket with Brooks as the clouds gathered and looked more ominous – this was Short’s maiden league half-century and he too played the cut and pull well as he hit nine fours.

Wellington’s innings went from 153-2 to 162-4 before the rain became too heavy to continue playing in and an early tea was taken, but it carried on pouring down and the two captains shook hands at 5.00pm and the match was formally abandoned as a draw.
