Wellington 2nd XI 62 Chard 2nd XI 66-2

Wellington 2nd XI suffered another big home defeat last weekend when league leaders Chard recorded an eight wicket win and with it consolidated their position at the top of the table and they are surely odds-on to win the Somerset League Reserves title for 2009 sooner rather than later.

Chard won the toss and asked Wellington to bat which was not surprising and after Kennedy (2-11 in 8 overs) had made early inroads despite Trevor Brooks making a pleasant looking 18, Wellington came back into the game as Kevin Crout with 16 and Richard Short with 13 got the score to 51-2 in 17 overs and Wellington were looking like going on to a more testing score than had been managed last time out, but when Short was caught at cover and Crout was bowled, seven wickets were lost for eleven runs and Wellington were shot out for 62 in 31.1 overs.

Dening with 4-23 in 10.1 overs and G.Warren with 2-10 in 8 overs formed a testing left-arm spin combo that ran through the Wellington lower order.

Chard set about the 63 needed for victory, but a great diving catch at mid-wicket by Alex Troake to get rid of Crew gave the visitors something to ponder as Richard Short got a wicket.

Will Hinchcliffe got a wicket on his senior debut as Richard Short collected a chance at mid-on to dismiss Clancy, but Durrance with 30no and Stoodley with 16no sealed the win for Chard.

Wellington visit Street this weekend.
