Belvedere 225-5 Wellington 181

Wellington find themselves back in the relegation zone in Division One of the Somerset League following this 44 run defeat at Belvedere last weekend when coupled with Staplegrove’s win over Temple Cloud.

Wellington asked the Weston-Super-Mare based hosts to bat first and Rowan Varkevisser got rid of Gullick in the seventh over on his way to figures of 1-38 in 10 overs, but it was fifteen overs until another breakthrough came Wellington’s way when Max Capaldi removed Burgess for 24.

But Kolambakar with 56 and R.Tasker with 71 pushed Belvedere towards 200 with a couple of good knocks that saw the home side finish their innings strongly.

Chadwick’s 33 and Dibben’s 21no saw Belvedere post 225-5 at tea in 45 overs as Wellington found themselves needing five an over to win this crucial match.

Wellington skipper Paul Short with 2-64 in 12 overs was the most successful Red and Blacks bowler.

Wellington slumped to 71-7 in 23 overs as the accurate Hosey with 4-23 in 12 fine overs did damage – three starts were made for Wellington, but were not developed.

It was left to Max Capaldi with 41 and Aks Latifi with 58 to revive Wellington’s knock with their 98 run eighth wicket offering – indeed this is a new Club record beating a 33 year-old standard – as they made Belvedere sweat that Wellington could chase the runs down despite their position.

Capaldi hit three fours and a six and Latifi hit seven fours and two sixes, but the fun was ended when Latifi was bowled by Watts (4-46).

Wellington were eventually dismissed for 181 with 2.1 overs left and took fourteen points from the match with Belvedere taking a full 35.

The team are away to Westlands next time out.
