Wellington 2nd XI 100 Bishops Lydeard 2nd XI 101-4Sunday, May 17th, 2009Wellington 2nd XI came unstuck against a confident and buoyant Bishops Lydeard side last weekend in Division One of the Somerset League Reserves competition as the side were asked to bat first for the third time in three matches. Trevor Brooks with 15 kept the Lydeard bowlers at bay and decent contributions from John Paine (10), Richard Short (19) and Graham Sparks (16) also featured for Wellington, but the Lydeard attack took wickets at regular intervals with Wookey’s 3-30 and Clarke’s 3-28 leading the way. A good last wicket stand of 18 between Jake Nicol and Alex Troake got Wellington to three figures. Lydeard had to work for the 101 runs to win as Richard Henwood and Martin Short let only 40 runs go in 15 overs between them and there were wickets for George Coate and Adrian Lee, but Clarke with 35no saw the home side over the line with six wickets in hand. Trevor Brooks showed his capacity as a bowler once more as he took 2-22, but Wellington could not prevent a six wicket defeat and took nine points from the match. They travel to Chard this weekend. Belvedere 159-7 Wellington 135Sunday, May 17th, 2009Wellington lost back-to-back home league matches for the first time since 2006 when Weston-Super-Mare based Belvedere recorded their first senior win over the Red and Blacks with this 24 run win last weekend in a match that was played against a backdrop of rain and wind. Belvedere were asked to take first knock and only realised 47 runs from their first twenty overs as Wellington bowled well initially. Rowan Varkevisser and new signing James Brown – who has joined from Crowcombe – bowled very well indeed as they gave the Belvedere openers no room and maintained a fine line and length. Varkevisser let only 12 runs go in seven overs and Brown five in five. Kevin Symons took up the attack as first change and took 2-40 in 11 good overs as he and skipper Paul Short got the first four wickets to fall as Kolambkar scooped one to Thom Trott off of Short and Alec Short – who kept wicket well – pouched one to give Symons reward as he dismissed Chadwick. In tandem Symons and Short sent Belvedere to 72-4 in 29 overs and Wellington had a good control of matters, but with 29 runs coming between overs 36 and 39 through Gadd (57) and Tasker (30), Belvedere had made some thirty more runs than they had looked likely to muster. Short with 3-34 in 11 overs bowled well. James Brown came back late on and ended with debut figures of 1-8 in 7 overs as Wellington took a wicket with the last ball of the innings as Alec Short ran out Crockett to need 160 to win. Rob Moysey and Mark Salter added a solid 24 runs for the opening wicket, but when Salter was caught behind for 12 and Moysey was well caught and bowled low down by Hosey for 10 Wellington had lost their openers. The score dipped to 31-4 and the Red and Blacks were in trouble. Paul Short and Max Capaldi added 23 fifth wicket runs and were looking solid and set when Short was caught behind. Capaldi was patiently building an innings and his offering of 22 with two fours was a good one, but was ended when he was stumped. Alec Short and Thom Trott with a seventh wicket stand of 34 gave Wellington hope of a narrow victory as Short top scored with 26 and Trott made 14, but when Loud was brought back into the attack he got both batsmen in the same over and with Watts getting a wicket too, Wellington were 111-9 with seven overs left, but a fine 24 run last wicket stand between James Brown (21no) and Rowan Varkevisser gave Wellington renewed hope as Brown hit a mighty six and they got the required target down into the twenties, but Kolambkar with 2-11 in 10.3 fine overs ended the charge and Belvedere had a 24 run win and 32 points to go home with. Wellington took 13 points and host Westlands this weekend. Wellington Sunday XI v South Petherton Sunday XISunday, May 17th, 2009Wellington Sunday XI’s home friendly match with Somerset League Division Two side South Petherton was washed out last weekend by heavy and prolonged showers on the morning of the match. Fixtures between the two clubs have a history of been affected by the weather with two of the four 1st XI league fixtures played in 2007 and 2008 been abandoned as draws. Better weather is hoped for in August when Wellington travel to South Petherton. Midweek XI v Holmbush Park – Friday 3rd JulyThursday, May 14th, 2009It is with regret that the Midweek XI’s match with Sussex side Holmbush Park that was set for Friday 3rd July has had to be cancelled due to the closure of the visitors accomodation in Taunton and their inability to find anywhere suitable as a replacement. They hope to return in 2010. Secretary’s New E-Mail AddressThursday, May 14th, 2009Please be advised that the Secretary has a new e-mail address with immediate effect. Sunday XI v North Curry – Monday 25th MayTuesday, May 12th, 2009As a result of the 1st XI’s Baker Cup commitments it has been decided to defer the Sunday XI’s away match with North Curry that been due to take place on Monday 25th May at Taunton School. With the extra cup match to contend with the Fixture Secretary has requested and received from North Curry their agreement in this respect. The match will now become an evening 20/20 match that the Midweek XI will contest – dates for this match have been proposed and once a firm agreement has been reached the details will be posted on this site. North Curry will visit Wellington for a friendly match later this season and this match is unaffected by any of the above. Baker Cup Shield (The Terry Mockridge Shield Competition)Tuesday, May 12th, 2009The 1st XI will travel to Somerset League Division Two club Fitzhead on the evening of Tuesday 26th May to begin the defence of their Terry Mockridge Shield title following last evening’s result in the main competition. Wellington 90 Chard 94-1Monday, May 11th, 2009Wellington 1st XI will defend their Baker Cup Shield title as they bowed out of the main competition on Monday evening when they were beaten by nine wickets by Chard at Courtland Road. Paul Short opted to bat first and saw Rob Moysey and Mark Salter add thirty for the first wicket, but this accounted for a third of Wellington’s total as the excellent left-arm spin of Dalwood realised figures of 5-7 in 5 overs as he sent the middle order into a spin. Moysey was caught at long-off for 20 and Salter was seventh out for 27, but only Rowan Varkevisser with 15 made double figures after the openers had. Sochon with 3-15 in 4.4 overs was good value for his figures too as Wellington were dismissed for 90 with two balls left. That Chard won by nine wickets does not tell the full story as Simon Rudd bowled an excellent spell of five overs and took 1-17, but Wellington were always fighting to stay in the game and with Glentworth making 58no and Dalwood 35no to go with his five wicket haul Chard won with 3.1 overs to spare. The Terry Mockridge Shield will commence on Tuesday 26th May with fixture details to be found in upcoming match reports and at www.sportinwellington.co.uk/cricket |
