Wellington 110-3 – Sampford Arundel A 112-2

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

Wellington looked as though they had a testing total to offer local rivals Sampford Arundel A, but they made short shrift of it as they made it to 76-0 in 5 overs as Dave Kittow and Ian Oliver made hay.
The introduction into the attack of John Paine and Bob Trott pulled things back somewhat as Trott Snr bowled John Pyle as he tried to cut one that was too close to him to play this sort of shot and Thom Trott returned to claim Darren Burns’ wicket, but it was all too little too late for Wellington who earlier had made 110-3 in their 12 overs.

Stuart Currall and Thom Trott had got away well with 44 in 5 overs, but this became 52-3 soon after and it needed good efforts from Bob Trott (26no) and John Paine (22no) to get the Red and Blacks up and over the 100 mark – both batted well, but Sampford Arundel A’s sheer start to their innings rendered any hopes of a Wellington victory redundant.

Wellington took 5 points from this match and the season’s bright start of four wins and a tie in five matches seems a long time ago now.

Butterleigh 140-3 – Wellington 116

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

Blake and Latchem raced away to a good start for the side from near Honiton despite Thom Trott bowling an exacting spell at the top of the innings – he let only 21 runs go in his three overs.
Dan Thorne – on debut – bowled some useful left-arm medium pace and was rewarded with Wellington’s first wicket of the match when a line and length ball accounted for Hall.
The big-hitting Clayton launched a mighty assault with nineteen coming from one over, but he was only interested in big shots and found that this approach did not come off as he may well have hoped it would have.
Bob Trott rallied well from this initial ‘welcome’ to the match to take 1-34 in 3 overs and he also held a good catch off of the ceiling.
Butterleigh got through to 140-3 in their 12 overs.

Wellington’s batting had functioned effectively this winter, but at 73-5 the cause was a lost one – Thom Trott made 22 and March Holloway made a well-crafted 38, but it was all in vain as Wellington fell to a 24 run defeat and took seven points from the match.

Wellington 118-2 – Bridgwater 120-2

Sunday, January 8th, 2006

Wellington returned to SCCC Indoor League action for the first time since mid-November and were defeated by four wickets by reigning champions Bridgwater, the Red and Blacks claiming five points in the process.

Stuart Currall and Thom Trott got Wellington away well as both made it to the retirement level of 25 with Trott lashing two hard hit sixes along the way.Currall was more circumspect, but ran the ball around the arena well.
Wellington nudged their way to 118-2 in 12 overs and this was a reasonable score to try and defend.

Bridgwater took until the penultimate over to make the runs, but they were always in command of the situation.
Bob Trott bowled an effective spell of off-spin and was rewarded when he bowled Standerwick behind his legs first ball and Alex Sparks showed a good turn and throw to run out Coombes, but Bridgwater recorded their eighth win in nine matches and look as if they will be there or thereabouts again this winter.

For Wellington this was a third defeat in a row following an unbeaten five games at the start of the season, but they will see next Sunday’s double header against Butterleigh (1.00pm) and Sampford Arundel A (3.20pm) as a good opportunity to get into the top half of the table.
Currently Wellington are fifth.
