Wellington 117-3 – Ashbrittle 119-4

Sunday, November 20th, 2005

A lack of depth to it’s bowling attack had a profound effect on the result of this SCCC Indoor League fixture last Sunday afternoon when Wellington went down by two wickets to Ashbrittle.

Stuart Currall and Marc Holloway opened the Wellington innings and were relatively untroubled by an Ashbrittle attack that conceded 42 wides.
At one stage it looked as if this pair would bat through.
Currall eventually retired on 26no and Holloway was a run out victim for 22.
Scrambled runs got Wellington to 117-3 in 12 overs.

Adrian Lee bowled as good a spell of indoor bowling as you could hope to see as he bowled straight and true to take 3-10 in 3 overs as he gave Wellington the edge early on, but he had to give way after his spell concluded and Wellington’s limited resources were found out.
Ashbrittle lost one more wicket, but they claimed victory at the start of the penultimate over.

Wellington now take a break from indoor competition until after Christmas.

Sampford Arundel B 132-5 – Wellington 134-4

Sunday, November 13th, 2005

Wellington made heavy weather of beating bottom side Sampford Arundel B and only did so in the last over. Bill Townsend and Andy Wells gave their side a good start, but this was negated by the double blow that Marc Holloway inflicted as he bowled Townsend for 16 and then next ball removed a real dangerman in Seb Coe.
Derek Greenway was then run out by a direct hit from Holloway and Sampford Arundel B were subsiding, but Chris Cherry played an enterprising innings of 22 until he was another run out victim as too was Andy Wells and Wellington had a chance of closing the Sampford Arundel B innings early. Barry Manley evaded dismissal as Wellington spurned a number of chances to remove him and he got his side to a respectable 132-5 in their 12 overs.

Wellington lost a wicket in the first over before Stuart Currall and Marc Holloway worked the ball around the arena to get Wellington’s scoring rate aligned to the required rate.
Holloway found the back wall as well and made it to retirement in good time as did Currall.
Alex Sparks – who is in good form in what is his first season of indoor cricket – again worked the ball well into the gaps and made it to the magical 25 mark as well.
Kevin Crout was the fourth Wellington batsman to do as such and this meant that Wellington had a good number of players to return to the arena, but on return both Holloway and Sparks were out and it was left to Currall and Crout to get the winning runs with just two balls to spare and to register a fourth straight win and nineteen points for the Red and Blacks.

Bridgwater 174-2 – Wellington 125-3

Sunday, November 13th, 2005

Reigning champions Bridgwater showed their undoubted class as they took Wellington for one of the highest indoor totals ever conceded by the Red and Blacks in their eleven seasons in indoor league at this venue.
Cohesive and effective batting from the Bridgwater side saw them coat along at 14.5 runs per over without ever really going ‘hammer and tongs’ at Wellington as they worked the ball well into the gaps and ran well between the wickets as well.
Four of their six batsmen retired.
Bob Trott was Wellington’s most effective bowler on the day as his slower style of bowling meant that the Bridgwater batsmen had to work more to get the ball away than had been the case with the faster bowlers that Wellington had employed on the day.
A run-out and a caught-and-bowled for Kevin Crout were Wellington’s rewards from an innings of hard slog for the Red and Blacks.

The required rate was unreasonable to chase down, so Wellington opted for some batting practice and it is pleasing to be able to report that maximum batting points were registered.
Skipper Thom Trott made 26no and Alex Sparks made his second retirement score of the day and there were runs late on for both Kevin Crout (14) and Bob Trott (17no) and it was he who made sure of full batting points by hitting the last ball of the match for six.
Wellington had been beaten by 49 runs, but took six points from this match and are still handily placed in the table.

Ashbrittle 97-4 – Wellington 98-3

Sunday, November 6th, 2005

Wellington continued their good start to the new indoor season with this three wicket that secured eighteen points for the Red and Blacks last Sunday afternoon.

Wellington bowled effectively with two changes to their attack from the last time out.Skipper Thom Trott bowled an exacting spell that cost only fifteen runs in three overs – his reward came when his father Bob held onto a great left-handed chance.
Marc Holloway too bowled a good spell as he cost only 22 runs in three overs.
Ashbrittle lost wickets regularly through their innings, but brothers Chris (52no) and Andy Hill (28) gave some respectability to their team’s final total.
Bob Trott’s off-spin cost just 24 runs and had a wicket rolled into it as well. Alex Sparks was pressed into action and did not do a bad job at all with the ball as did Sam Cook in the field.

Wellington lost a wicket in the second over, but Stuart Currall and Marc Holloway combined effectively with knocks of 31no and 28no respectively that just settled any jitters they may have had.
Both ran the ball around the arena effectively.

Two further wickets were lost, but Bob Trott used all his experience to guide his side home with a good knock of 15no that saw the winning single hit.
