Wellington 165-6 Tiverton Heathcoat 72
Saturday, April 30th, 2005Wellington bulldozed Heathcoat on their own patch for the second year running as the former Devon Premier League club, who have fallen on hard times, were well beaten by 93 runs.
Heathcoat opted to ask Wellington to bat on a green wicket that, apart from the crease lines, was indistinguishable from the actual pitch itself and at 8-2 this seemed to be a good decision as left-armer Chilcott and Drew (2-14 in eight overs) did some damage, but Mark Salter ground out 22 invaluable runs to steady things as and Wellington’s overseas player for 2005 – the South African Richard das Neves – put on 33 for the third wicket, Salter was removed LBW when he was late on a full toss.
das Neves showed his undoubted class with an innings of 37 that was built on skill and grit as he coped with the foreign pitch conditions well – he will be looking forward to the pitches firming up and being something more like what he is used to back home.
James Dyke conjured up a top quality knock of 37 that saw him manoeuvre the ball around the slow outfield with precision as his tally of eleven twos shows.
John Paine smote 44no in 46 balls as Wellington passed 150 with ease and got through to 165-6 at tea.
The Red and Blacks felt that 125 would be the top score that Tiverton would achieve, as it was they never got anywhere near it as the seven bowlers that Wellington used all did their job in exemplary manner.
John Paine and Stuart Turner never let the home side make any sort of start and removed the openers between them.
Richard das Neves showed his talents with the ball and bowled a quality stint of controlled off-spin that realised three wickets for only 14 runs in eight overs, his faster ball looks like it will be something that opposing batters will have to think long and hard about in 2005.
Adrian Lee and Kevin Symons were the second raft of seamers that Wellington employed and Lee hit the right line from the off and a juggled Gary Tillett catch gave him his first reward of the season.
Symons got Harvey with grubber and Andrews scooped one to Stuart Turner and 2-9 in four overs was a good reward for Symons.
Gary Tillett (1-5) and new Wellington skipper Rob Moysey (1-0) rounded things off to see Heathcoat dismissed in 33.4 overs for only 72.
This was a good work out for Wellington with everybody having a workout.
