Butterleigh 85 – Wellington 87-0

Sunday, January 9th, 2005

Back in November Butterleigh had thrashed Wellington when they chased down 114 to win at a canter, but this time the Red and Blacks were in the ascendancy from the off as Thom Trott got one to rise and catch the edge of Coles’ bat and Stuart Currall obliged to hold onto a dipping chance.
Trott struck again to get rid of left-hander Reed as he fenced at one, only to see it rebound off the wall where Gary Tillett was waiting. Trott’s 2-16 in 3 overs was a good reward for his efforts.

Taking the new ball with him was John Paine and he delivered three good overs at pace and with his left-arm over delivery style as well on offer he was a real handful. His reward came when Clayton was yorked nick and crop.

Twenty-nine runs came in two overs though as Butterleigh staged something of a comeback, but Gary Tillett and Mark Saunders saw this did not come to much with figures of 2-15 and 1-13 respectively that dismissed the side from near Honiton for 85 with one ball to spare.

Clayton was fast and furious and Stuart Currall and Thom Trott had to weather this storm and this they did and began to grow in confidence, aided in no small measure by some wayward Butterleigh bowling that conceded some 42 extras!

Wellington won in 9.4 overs and had erased the memory of their poor showing against this team back in November with Currall making 24no and Trott 21no.

Wellington 120-1 – Sampford Arundel A 102-4

Sunday, January 9th, 2005

Wellington beat Sampford Arundel A for the third time in the last four indoor outings when they held their nerve to defend 120 after batting first.

Stuart Currall and Thom Trott again gave Wellington a firm base from which to go on from and Trott retired in style with a straight driven four back past the bowler, he made 26no.
Currall retired late on and his 28no was a useful addition to Wellington’s total. Alec Short and John Paine saw that full batting points were obtained and Wellington had 121 to play with.
Again extras had played their part in their total as Sampford Arundel A let 40 of these go.

Alec Short’s fine swoop, pick-up and release to run out Ian Oliver second ball of the Sampford A innings put Wellington in a good position and when John Paine got through Dave Kittow’s defence Wellington had two wickets for 23 on the board. Vince Milton was playing a good hand for his team and made it to 25no and retirement in good style and when he was batting in tandem with Laurence Burns, Sampford Arundel A had a chance of victory. But Wellington removed Burns when he chipped one to Thom Trott who was waiting on the back wall off of Paul Short and Gary Tillett’s removal of Pete Kittow, caught off the wall by Paul Short, signalled the end of Sampford A’s assault on the 121 needed.

Vince Milton and Darren Winter saw time out without any further loss of wickets, but Wellington had had a good afternoon with 38 out of 40 points coming their way.

Wellington take on Barrington next Sunday (16th January) and the following team will contest this 5.50pm starting fixture,S.Rudd (Capt), S.Currall (Wkt), J.Paine, M.Saunders, G.Tillett & T.TrottContact will be made during the week to confirm details etc.

Wellington 94 – Bridgwater 95-3

Sunday, January 2nd, 2005

Wellington took Bridgwater all the way in this SCCC Indoor League match last Sunday afternoon, but eventually conceded the double to the unbeaten leaders with one over to go in the game.

Bridgwater’s strength is their bowling and again they strangled the Wellington run supply to the extent that the Red and Blacks had only 36 runs on the board at the halfway stage (6 overs), but Stuart Currall and Simon Rudd increased in presence and so Wellington’s score rose.
Currall top scored with 33 that included an amazing flat-batted six to retire on. Rudd made a solid 19 that saw him repel all Bridgwater could throw at him.

Gary Tillett, Bob Trott and John Paine scrambled together what runs they could and in the end Wellington had made an acceptable 94, a good final score bearing in mind the pressure that they were under in the first throes of their innings.

Bridgwater’s openers Butt and Vickery set about the 95 needed with some ease as they had 39 on the board in four overs before Butt was neatly caught off the wall by Simon Rudd from John Paine, who took his fifth indoor wicket of the season against Bridgwater with this dismissal.

Paine and Thom Trott bowled well first up for Wellington. Bridgwater stuttered to victory, mindful that Wellington had bowled them out for 74 back in November, as Simon Rudd and Gary Tillett gave them much to think of. Rudd was tight in line and length and Tillett took 2-12 in his 2 overs, but in the end Bridgwater crossed the winning line with three wickets and one over to spare.

Wellington face two games next Sunday (9th January) when they take on Butterleigh at 2.00pm and Sampford Arundel A at 4.20pm. The teams for these games will be advised in the week.
