Bridgwater 74 – Wellington 56

Sunday, November 28th, 2004

Bridgwater openers Butt and Standerwick had 49 on the board in only four overs and looked set to put Wellington to the sword in the Red and Blacks second game of the afternoon, but a wonderful burst from John Paine shattered their innings as they lost all six wickets for 25 runs as Paine claimed 4-12 in 2.3 overs.

Bowling straight and true he used his left-arm angle to claim two leg before decisions, got one to lift through to Stuart Currall behind the sticks and then re-arranged the castle of last man Hewson as he had a massive mow at a straight one. Kevin Symons outthought Davis and yorked him with a great ball.

Wellington had a great chance to record a famous indoor win, needing 75 to win.
But if Wellington had produced a great bowling effort then Bridgwater played like men possessed as they blew Wellington away to the tune of 23-5 in under 5 overs as Davis moved the ball alarmingly and Higgins obtained steepling bounce, although a number of blatent no-balls were missed when he overstepped.
John Paine was left to bat on his own and save Wellington from an embarrasing total and he played well for his 21, but the fun was ended when that man Davis caught him off the wall and Wellington were all out in 9.4 overs.

This was a game that Wellington should have won for sure, having reduced Bridgwater from 49-0 to 74 all out, but they were met with a ferocious onslaught.

The team now take a Christmas break and reappear on Sunday 2nd January when they take on Bridgwater in the reverse fixture of this one.

Sampford Arundel B 116-3 – Wellington 119-1

Sunday, November 28th, 2004

Sampford Arundel B were reigned in by Wellington as they notched up only 47 runs in the first six overs of their innings as Adrian Lee and Kevin Symons, making a welcome return to the county ground, produced spells that cost only 22 and 20 runs respectively.

Bill Townsend and Andy Wells (with 19 and 23) had given their side a good base though.
Seb Coe built on this with a hard-hitting 25no and Barry Manley and Chris Cherry got Sampford Arundel B to 116-3 in 12 overs.

Sampford Arundel B had a reasonable total to play with, but did not make best use of it as they bowled waywardly and raggedly. Wellington had 44 on the board in 3 overs before Seb Coe entered the attack and in total let only 15 runs go in 2.5 overs.

But Wellington had time and overs to spare when they made it past the total and collected 17 points as their poor play of the previous week was consigned to history as Stuart Currall, Simon Rudd, Kevin Symons and Richard Short all played useful knocks.
